Two volumes. Centuries of vampire history. One collection.
Before the vampire became a figure of fiction, accounts of blood-drinking corpses and nocturnal attacks circulated through Central Europe. This two-book set follows those accounts from early modern investigations to the folklore of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Included in this set
- Before Nosferatu (1488–1742) brings together thirteen historical documents from the German-speaking and Habsburg world. Translated and annotated, they record inquiries into vampires, revenants and “blood sucking corpses”, including the Medvedia vampire epidemic investigation.
- Vampire & Nachtmar (1768–1930) continues the story through Central European accounts of the Nachtmar (nightmare) and other nocturnal beings. Translated texts and editorial commentary explore sleep-time assaults, the loss of vitality and the shifting boundaries between nightmare spirits, witches, revenants and vampires.
Read together, the volumes trace how lived fears, folklore and early attempts at explanation shaped the European vampire. A compelling pair for readers of vampire history, folklore and historical source texts.
