(99942) Apophis was discovered on June 19, 2004 by Roy A. Tucker, David J. Tholen, and Fabrizio Bernardi. Although relatively small—approximately 325 meters in diameter—it is an asteroid of exceptional significance. The orbital period of Apophis is 323 days and 12 hours.

In ancient Egyptian mythology, Apophis was the adversary of the solar gods Aten and Ra, symbolizing the forces of darkness and chaos. Astrologically, a strongly positioned Apophis in the chart evokes a persistent, underlying sense of threat or impending disaster. It may be regarded as the most eschatological of all asteroids.

On April 13, 2029, asteroid 99942 Apophis will make an exceptionally close flyby of Earth, passing at a distance of roughly 31,600 km (about 20,000 miles) above Earth’s surface—closer than many geostationary satellites and well within the Moon’s orbit.

Apophis may potentially alter its orbit in such a way that it could subsequently be classified as an Apollo-type asteroid. It remains a potentially hazardous object; a hypothetical Earth impact would release energy equivalent to approximately 900 megatons, around 18 times the yield of the largest nuclear weapon ever tested.

Classification and Composition

Like 1862 Apollo, 2102 Tantalus, 3753 Cruithne, 6489 Golevka, 2063 Bacchus, and 9969 Braille, Apophis is classified as an Sq/Q-type asteroid—a relatively rare compositional group rich in olivine and pyroxene.

Astrological Interpretation

Astrologically, Apophis sharply delineates what an individual consciously or unconsciously experiences as a chronic, deeply personal threat. This is especially evident through oppositions and squares, which render the occupied signs and houses threatening in nature.

Apophis is named after Apophis, representing the chaotic force of darkness in the form of a colossal serpent—repeatedly slain yet never fully destroyed by the ruling gods.

In a positive expression, Apophis confers a Typhonian strength and fighting capacity, though overcoming obsessive negative emotions remains an ongoing challenge. Light exists only by virtue of darkness; in itself, light does not exist.
